Being SELFish
One of the good things that came out of the Covid-19 years is a greater awareness of and willingness to deal with issues relating to mental health and well-being. It appears practically every workplace is looking for ways to implement practices to ensure their teams are well supported in this space.
Given this shift, I am frustrated with the fact that I am having conversations with business owners and leaders who are willing to work 60+ plus hours a week while complaining about their health & well-being. They are prioritising the needs of their customers and their team over their health and well-being.
In response, I encourage business owners and leaders to be SELFish by putting themselves first for as Simon Sinek says:
“Putting yourself first is not selfish. Quite the opposite. You must put yourself first before you can be of help to anyone else”
I also refer to the following quote from a manager of a hospice unit at a major London hospital:
“In over 30 years of working with the dying, the one statement I have never heard from a person on their deathbed is ‘I wish I had spent more time in the office’”
