Check Your Warning Lights

I always enjoy hearing stories from my clients about their business achievements.  Recently, a client shared an impressive milestone: the business they started six months ago had more than doubled its month-on-month revenue. They were also excited about their ambitious plans for the next 12 months.

As our conversation continued, it became clear my client was feeling overwhelmed by the rapid growth of their business. They expressed concerns about having less time for important activities outside of work, such as spending time with family, and feeling a loss of control over their life.

In that moment, I stressed to my client the importance of prioritizing their well-being.  I emphasized the need for them to regularly check in on their “warning lights,” much like the dashboard lights in a car. When they start their car, the warning lights briefly illuminate to indicate any potential issues. If any lights remain on, it signals a problem that could affect safety and will need to be addressed.

I reminded my client that under stress, our focus narrows to immediate tasks causing us to overlook the broader perspective and ignore warning signs.

To help my client widen their perspective, I encouraged them to:

  • Identify behaviours that would indicate they are losing control and perspective.
  • Establish a feedback system whereby people in their community are encouraged to regularly check-in when they see any of those behaviours manifesting themselves.

By taking these steps, my client will be better able to navigate the challenges of rapid growth in the business while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
