Set Boundaries Around Your Life

I love hearing from clients about the impact our conversations have had on them achieving alignment in business + life.

This happened in the past week when I had a coffee with a client who I last had a conversation with about 18 months ago.

At that time, the client was a mum to three young children and set to launch a business.  The key context for our conversation was about minimising the impact being in business would have on her ability to be a partner and a mum.

We discussed and set non-negotiables around what it meant to her to be a partner and a mum such as:

  • Doing the drop-off and pick-up from school/kindergarten/childcare
  • Having the evening meal together as a family
  • Attending the children’s sport on weekends
  • Not working on business issues on weekends (except after the children went to bed)
  • Having date night with her partner at least once a month

Since our conversation, the business has traded beyond her wildest expectations.  What I loved to hear though was that notwithstanding the business success, the non-negotiables set around being a partner and mum were truly non-negotiable.  As she admitted without those non-negotiables setting boundaries around her life, her ever expanding business would have dominated her life.  As result she would not have been able to be the partner and mum she aspired to be.
