Test the YES

Over the many years of being a business coach + mentor, I have been in hundreds of conversations with prospects demonstrating how coaching can help them create the business and life to which they truly aspire.  At the end of those conversations the majority of those prospects, said YES, they were happy to engage me as their business coach + mentor.

I left that conversation feeling excited about bringing on a new client.  As a result, I rushed back to my office, e-mailed out the Terms of Engagement and booked in the time for the first coaching conversation.

From there I heard nothing back from the new client.  When I contacted the client, they advised they were not in the position to take on a business coach + mentor.  However, if they needed one in the future they would be back in contact.

I finished that conversation feeling downcast and started doubting my abilities as a business coach + mentor.

To avoid this situation, I evaluate each and every YES I receive from a prospect.

The way I do this is that after receiving the YES, I ask the prospect to slow down and truly consider whether they want a business coach + mentor.  I ask them to go away and sleep on the decision over night. If they still feel the same way about the decision in the morning to respond they are a definitive YES.

The responses have ranged from prospects who do not need to sleep on the decision are in straight away to those who responded they do not wish to proceed.

I love the approach as it means when a prospect does say YES, I know they are committed to the coaching process to change the way they are living their lives.
