The Second Step is the Hardest

During my conversation with business owners, it is clear there is a big gap between their vision for the future and where they are today.  The business owner sees that gap as something so wide that it cannot be bridged and therefore takes no action towards making their vision a reality.

To encourage business owners to act, I refer them to the well-known Chinese proverb:

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

I follow that up with the quote from Moffat Machingura:

“The first step is the hardest in every journey of dreams”

Thus, business owners begin to comprehend they must start the journey to create their vision.

After watching the documentary about Philippe Petit’s high wire walk between the two towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974 in the past week, I was caused to reflect on whether the first step in the journey is the hardest.

During the documentary, Philippe made the comment the first step onto the high wire was not the hardest as at that point there was one foot on the wire and one on the ground.  The second step was the hardest for at that point both feet were precariously trying to balance on the high wire.

My reflection from hearing this is that business owners have taken the first step onto the high wire of running a business.  It is the next step that truly scares the hell out of them – which is what they are going to have to do to successfully continue along that high-wire!
