I believe it must be an imperative for every business owner to develop a crystal-clear vision about the business they are aspiring to create.  Such a vision when clearly communicated, possesses real power in setting directions, motivating action, and guiding decision making.  A clear vision is a coherent and powerful statement of what the business aspires to create over the coming years.

In my conversations with business owners, they will often challenge me about the need to have a vision for the business.  They question when has a clear vision ever inspired others to achieve great things?

When I am challenged with this question, I refer them to the time when on 25 May 1961 John F Kennedy stood before a joint session of Congress and proposed the US ‘”…should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth”.

 The incredible thing about this vision was that at the time JFK made this speech, America had a grand total of 20 hours of manned space flight.   However, with these words a generation was inspired and led to Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to walk on the moon on 20 July 1969.
