I Am The Mentor I Wish I Had

In a conversation with a prospective client in the past week, we exchanged stories about our respective journeys in business & life.

As I reflected on my own journey, a profound insight emerged:  the absence of a coach and mentor during the early years of my career significantly shaped my passion for coaching and mentoring today. I realized how different my journey might have been if there was someone available in my life whose experiences I could learn from and whose wisdom could have illuminated the path ahead. This realization underpins my commitment to provide the kind of support and guidance I missed during those early years.

Navigating without a coach and mentor meant I faced challenges and made decisions largely on my own. Whilst this built resilience and self-reliance it also brought moments of doubt and isolation. In those moments I had to figure out, not just the steps needed to achieve success, but also how to cope with setbacks, stay motivated, and balance my aspirations with the expectations of those around me. Although this built a solid foundation of self-determination, it underscored the gaps a supportive coach and mentor could have filled.

If I could have been my own coach and mentor, I would have offered a blend of guidance, empathy, and encouragement — the very qualities I now strive to bring to my clients. I would have set out to create a safe space for exploring diverse paths and embracing the learning process. By encouraging my younger self to take leaps of faith and seize opportunities, I would have emphasized that growth and long-term success will come when I step outside my comfort zone.

Moreover, I would have emphasized the journey of self-discovery. In those early years it was easy to be swayed by external expectations and the pursuit of conventional success. I would have guided myself to listen to my inner voice and follow my true passions, ensuring alignment between my actions and my core values and dreams.

Balancing professional ambitions with personal well-being is another crucial lesson I would have imparted. While career achievements are important, maintaining mental and emotional health is essential for long-term fulfillment. I would have stressed the importance of mindfulness and self-care, recognizing that a fulfilled life extends beyond professional success.

Today, this philosophy deeply shapes my approach to coaching and mentoring. I aim to be the mentor I did not have in the early years of my career – offering not just advice, but a partnership in my clients’ journeys of self-discovery and growth. By fostering a compassionate, supportive, and empowering environment, I help my clients navigate their paths with confidence and authenticity, much like the mentor I wish I had to guide me through my career.
