Which Wolf are you feeding?
One of the books I read during my summer holidays, and one I highly recommend, is “My Dream Time: a memoir of tennis & teamwork” by Ash Barty.
By page 10, I became captivated by Ash’s story when she recounts the Native American tale of the two wolves:
“…a young man who asks his grandfather about the painful struggle and fight between the two growling animals inside of him. One wolf is evil – it is anger and greed, arrogance and self-pity, ego and sorrow. The other wolf is good – it is faith and compassion, joy and love, humility and hope. They are both biting at each other, trying to control the young man.
The young man asks: ‘Which wolf will win?’
The grandfather answers: ‘The one you feed.”
Whilst this was the first time I had heard this tale, it struck a chord. The story accurately describes the struggles I and my clients go through in dealing with the challenges faced in business & life. The struggle to choose which wolf to feed!
The most important lesson from the struggle is to make an active choice to be happy & content. I accept I possess everything I need to be happy because I am whole as I am, right now. As I am constantly feeding that wolf, the bigger and stronger it has become meaning I am well equipped to deal with challenges in business + life.
A word of warning – Whilst I am making that wolf stronger, the other wolf does not go away! It is lurking in the dark & shadows waiting for the opportunity to strike doubt, fear and worry into my actions in business + life.
