How Does a Child Spell Love?
During my discussions with business owners regarding the drivers behind them being in business, a recurring theme emerges; the desire to dedicate more time to their families. Paradoxically, as their businesses thrive, these same business owners will often discover that their increasing success means they are committing less time to their families.
While on holiday last week I was reminded of this paradox during a discussion with the wife of a successful business owner. She shared the challenges of persuading her husband to take a break with the family and truly disconnect during vacations. The essence of our conversation can be encapsulated in a poignant question:
How does a child spell love? T-I-M-E
This discussion reminded me of the following story shared by a senior executive of a major financial institution when questioned about why he was leaving a networking event early:
“Whilst I have two older children from my first marriage, I have no substantial relationship with them.
However, in my second marriage, I am blessed to be a Dad of two children who are two and four. I’ve committed to being home by 7:00 pm to engage in the cherished bedtime custom of reading to them before they go to sleep.
I am determined to give my second family the time that I regrettably did not provide to my first.”
